The Nikki Clarke Show is transforming lives, one story at a time.
Nicholas Marcus Thompson is an award-winning social justice advocate and labour union leader in Canada. As the first Black Canadian to be elected as president of the Union of Taxation Employees (UTE) Toronto North, Nicholas is committed to finding solutions and using his platform to eliminate anti-Black racism and discrimination of all kinds to promote equity, job security, and ensure fairness for all Canadians.
As President of UTE Toronto North, Nicholas embarked on an ambitious plan to modernize and restructure the day to day operations of the Union. By developing a roadmap to digitize UTE unionism called Vision 2021, he created a more responsive and modern Union that is better able to adapt to rapid changes in the workplace while providing much more access to its membership. These efforts resulted in workers having better access to the supports needed to advance their careers through enhanced job security, and the overall empowerment of Union members to foster a collective voice at work.
In 2019, Nicholas won the Don Valley East candidacy nomination for the federal New Democratic Party of Canada, making him the first Black candidate to ever secure the nomination in that riding. He went on to campaign for increased affordability, green new jobs, universal pharmacare, and action on climate change – securing 4,591 votes and placing third in a six-way race.
In January 2020 Nicholas was named the Activist of the Year by the Public Service Alliance of Canada in Toronto. This prestigious award is presented to individuals who work tirelessly to unite all workers in a single democratic organization. The recipients are also recognized for their efforts to obtain the best standards of compensation, job security, and their commitment to protecting the rights and interests of all workers.
Nicholas is fighting for a new Canada where people can retire securely, find affordable housing that meets their needs, and be part of a climate change action plan that won’t leave workers behind. Nicholas is committed to forging a future where systemic anti-Black racism ceases to be a barrier that limits the potential and excellence of Canada’s Black communities.
